Northern Alberta tends to conjure images of flowing fields of canola and wheat, cowboys whether real or fake, and the Ukrainian roots shared among some of its inhabitants. Ones mind doesn’t often drift to the brightly coloured fans, veils and skirts of Middle Eastern belly dance. In Grande Prairie, one woman, herself of Ukrainian decent, has been promoting this uniquely feminine art by performing and teaching Egyptian style belly dance. I went to her studio, Moon Dance Shimmy to see a small preview of her troupe’s upcoming performance. Located in the former Rabbit Hole Bookstore location, I felt as if the room had maintained some of its Wonderland qualities as I entered the brightly coloured studio.
