The Pit
Although the seasons
Come and go,
I pray that my sobriety
Will constantly grow.
For years on end
I’ve tried to quit,
To pull myself out
 Of that deep, dark pit.

It was years ago
When I fell into the trap,
It’s filled with alcohol,
 Drugs and crap.
The walls are soaked
 With suffering and pain,
The guilt and remorse
Eat away at my brain.

I pulled myself [...]

Have you ever
Heard the laughter
Of the folks
Who made it “Home”?
The ones who walked
Wondered and waited
Just to see a smile.
Recovery is a joyous gift
That brightens up the Soul.
The laughter returns as we share
Our Journey to the things that made us whole.
Thanks for the song of laughter
That gives laughter to my night.
Thanks for the smile
That makes it [...]

Oh what a miracle you are.
You are sitting in a meeting.
Not hiding in a bar.
You are learning.
You are growing.
You have discovered you can do it.
I am so proud of you learning
I am so proud of you laughing.
I am so proud of you living
A clean
Happy
Joyous
Free
Life.
You are a wonderful miracle.
You make my recovery more alive. [...]

This birthday card is dedicated to a drunk I was in love with who was still in love with the bottle and the addiction.

It is your birthday.
You were important to me.
I was not important to you.
That made me sad.
Saying good-bye to you
Made me glad.
Your being emotionally unavailable
Made it mandatory.
That was too too bad.

I picked your [...]

They were carrying the message.
Some spoke,
some smiled,
all hugged.
They drove many miles.
They were carrying the message
of recovery
of hope
of love for one another
of freedom from dope.
They were carrying the message.
We knew that they would.
How blessed we are
that they came
 to our neighbourhood.
They carried the message of
love
service
gratitude.
Things that will help us with our attitude.
The outreach was appreciated.
No [...]

“Upon Awakening
Soul will be free.”
That is the promise that was given to me.
I was a child sitting in church
What did I know?
I knew of the wondrous things.
I lived in the moment.
I heard angels sing
I was told to sit still,
I wanted to move,
I wanted to dance,
I wanted to laugh,
I was told to be quiet.
I was angry [...]

My being Irish
is a gift I received from the tribe.
My Irish drinking
barely kept me alive.
My Irish temper
scares even me.
Then the “pot” of gold
that was given to me
Had me down on bended knee.
The snakes from Ireland
are often found in my head.
I cannot surrender…
I often dread.
Now the Sunlight of the Spirit raises its Voice.
When I do listen, [...]

The desire for healing washed over me.
It took me by force.
It overwhelmed me.
It washed away the fear and the anger.
I was caught in the tunnel
I swore it came from within me.
I swore it came from Above.
It cleansed me and I felt freedom at last.
All of the burdens
All my shame and guilt of the past
Were gone.
Thank [...]

He ate the gun

He did not bite the bullet
Nor decide to continue the race
He stuck the gun in his mouth
I have been in that sad god-forsaken place
I was lucky
I had someone to call
I wish I had been there for you.
I love you,
That’s all.
