Wearily, he kicked off his boots
sending them across the floor.
He had ” had it.”
Could not take any more.
She would have
helped him
off with his boots,
his coat and the hat.
She would have
welcomed him home.
She was always
like that.
She was no longer here.
She had gone ahead
on their journey together.
But, tonight, the rain
had stopped the work early.
He had stopped
to sing with a friend.
Wanted, now, to share
that new music with her.
Sing ‘some of the new stuff’
they came up with together.
She was not home to greet him.
Not to hug him,
not to wash his feet,
not to rub his back.
Awh, some days
it was just like that.
So, he kicked off his boots.
Laid his tired, lonely, and sad
head on the pillow.
He fell into her arms as he dreamed.
She washed his feet
with her tears.
